University Memorial

Designed by Chris Whittington

The University of Chichester required a memorial piece in memory of three students who tragically died in a traffic accident in 2005.   Along with other students, I submitted a design in the form of a half scale maquette, and I was lucky enough to have my proposal chosen.

A local fabricator was invited to construct my design from the full size cartoon (plan) I drew up.  After an initial meeting with the fabricator, when materials, joining and mounting methods and metal finishes were discussed, the piece was constructed.
The piece is constructed from 6mm mild steel rod that has been galvanised to prevent rust, and a series of circular stainless steel discs.  The discs consist of three sets of three, with either a polished, semi-matt or matt finish.

The narrative of the piece reads from right to left, the three discs covered in marks depict each student starting out at university, the finish of the discs describes them as individuals not yet part of the team or family.  The central discs see the students melding together and becoming team players and friends.  The smallest shiniest discs depict their final journey together.
