Fused Glass
Fusing glass is a method of creating beautiful, bespoke jewellery and other glass items by heating the glass in a kiln until it becomes fluid, then cooling carefully back to its solid state before removing from the kiln.
Prior to fusing the glass is cut to size, then cleaned in vinegar and water before being assembled in two or more layers on the kiln shelf. The shelf will previously have been coated in shelf primer, or covered with a piece of thinfire shelf paper. This prevents the glass sticking to the kiln shelf when it becomes fluid.
During the firing cycle the kiln rises to a temperature of 800oc, being carefully controlled through the stress release points on the rise, and fall from this temperature. This ensures that the glass has no defects that could cause it to shatter. In our kiln this process takes about 24 hours from turning the kiln on to taking the pieces out when the kiln temperature falls below 50oc.
To finish our fused glass pendants we use a high quality adhesive to secure a sterling silver bail to the glass, and then thread this with a sterling silver chain. The pendant is then placed in a presentation box for sale.
